Rita Enterpeneurship Day(RED)

Rita Entrepreneurship Day (RED). RED is a fun, experiential program that teaches young girls and women how to start, own and operate their very own business.

Our program inspires young girls in times like this to have an entrepreneurial mindset to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams .

RED will expose girls and women to the different aspects of entrepreneurship and our mentorship platform BigSistah Meetups which provides after school mentoring opportunities in underserved communities.

BigSistah aim to build an inclusive workforce by connecting girls and women to provide fresh perspectives and insights on their culture and business issues.

Girls and women are not the future. They are the present
The BigSistah Academy is advantageous for young people because:


1. Many young people (particularly those experiencing disadvantage) are amongst the beneficiaries,


2. Young girls already form a large proportion of those interested in developing start-ups,


3. Young people are more likely to have skills in aspects of information and communications technologies.

Nutritious school farm.

The farm to school project seeks to re-establish the link between the food students eats and where it comes from through the medium of hands-on constructive education. Students will be able to develop entrepreneurial skills by processing and making products from the produce grown and selling it at school events, while educating their community about healthy eating and the importance of agriculture as sustenance.

FROM FARM TO SCHOOL NETWORK (FF2SN)

From Farm to School Network, commonly referred to as FF2SN, is a program that helps children learn where their food comes from, how it is grown, and offers hands-on experiences with it, in turn making them more likely to accept new foods into their diet.

Girls Farmers Club

Girls Farmers’ Clubs (GFC) was established in 2014 to further the education and farming skills of young girls in agriculture.

 

The aims and objectives of Girls Farmers’ Club as a voluntary organization include and not limited to the following:

  1. a) To train up students on how to manage farms.
  2. b) To acquaint students with different techniques of farming.
  3. c) To make/encourage students develop interest in agriculture.
  4. d) To make information available on agricultural breakthrough to improve students’ knowledge.

AGRIC KIDS CLUB (AKC)

The main goal of this club is to provide a fun opportunity for children to broaden their knowledge of agriculture and to interact with other students who have a shared interest in agriculture.

There are several reasons why the establishment of agric kids club is important. Such as:

 

  • Reinforce the relevance of agriculture to children in everyday lives.
  • Offer children the opportunity to serve the community.
  • Expand children’s leadership skills by conducting demonstrations, lab activities or community outreach events.
  • Allow kids to cultivate interest in agriculture in an informal environment, without the pressure of being graded

CASSAVA LINK

Cassava link is a social enterprise that improves food and income security by facilitating Nigerian women farmers with the right tools to efficiently harvest their crops. This technology is designed so that a semi or fully illiterate women farmers in Nigeria can use it.

 

Who is Miss Rita Robert Otu?

iNTRODUCING MISS RITA OTU

Rita Robert Otu is the CEO of Beau Haven Farms and a creative agriculturist, activist, researcher, and published author. With an academic background in international political economy and development, she focuses on food security, migration, and democracy. Beau Haven Farms is a profit organisation that creates food awareness on malnutrition. It focuses on education, access to food, budget, tastes, and adequate food intake. The organization’s goal is to involve individuals at an early stage to radically change common misconceptions about food, specifically in urban areas.

A pioneer in food policy research, Ms. Otu brought the issue of nutrition to the forefront by using both economic and medical research to convince development leaders to make biofortified crops an urgent priority in the global food security agenda. For over ten years she has been striving to advance democracy and human rights across Africa. A Nigerian, she has worked on social justice issues as an NGO activist, a democracy and electoral assistance provider, a grant maker, a political writer, and translated poet. Rita holds an MSC in International Development from Manchester University. She also holds a BSC in Agricultural Economics from the University of Calabar, Nigeria. As a creative activist, she uses her power of words and imagery to move people from awareness to end hunger in Africa. These messages are disseminated across the world to a diverse audience through her shows and performances at international festivals. In 2018, she was awarded a certificate from Study UK British Council for her entrepreneurial skills in Nigeria to end hunger.

Rita Robert Otu studied masters in International Development (Economics and Management of Rural Development) at the Global Development Institute. She returned to Nigeria in 2009 and was inspired to start the Peas Food project, providing education and teaching green skills to young women.

Rita says investing in women’s farming was always a priority for her.  “With a family history in farming and having grown up watching and follow my parents on the farm, perhaps it’s no surprise I’ve ended up where I have. I was a facilitator for Girls Power Initiative and I knew the challenges faced by women in Nigeria.”
